Letter from Chairperson

This letter is a newly added feature of future communications between the Commission and staff. It was decided in the 105th Commission meeting in December last year that a note should be sent to you all from the Chairperson to keep you updated on the latest developments. We hope to open up to you on what we are planning and thinking about. You can respond as you see fit.

Connie from QMH has resigned as some of you would have known. It was sad as Winnie, Dr. Ku and I had talked to her on separate occasions but she has successfully persuaded us instead that it was in her best interest not to pursue this career further. We hope her every success in her future endeavors. Evelyn from KWH has moved over to QMH to take up Connie’s position. The Commission quickly interviewed several potential candidates for the opening and we have now a new friend at CMC. Please pop in to say hello if you have the time.

Patty has flown to the Philippines to refresh herself on the latest of CPE’s and she will return later this summer. Fendy will also go on an extended vacation. We hope she will enjoy her holidays and come back refreshed.

The Commission is planning on updating our website to make it more user-friendly and interesting. We are considering adding interactive features like discussion forums. We might also collect useful articles and keep a databank of it that can be retrieved any time from the internet.

Some of our volunteers have been very active and they now have a chat room in the internet. The Commission is thinking about giving them hand in future developments (e.g. volunteer class alumni group).

The number of staff and the number of offices that we are running has been expanding over the years. The Commission believes that it is time for us to review our future goals and paths. We are planning a strategic workshop and we plan to include all of you in this important review.

We are cooperating with QMH in a new project on outreaching spiritual care services. Many other organizations are involved and we hope to make our services more complete by participating in this. At the mean time, we act as an intermediate and will refer patients to their respective parishes for follow ups. We will be running volunteer programmes for these parishes.

Please give these some thoughts and give Winnie any idea or worries that you have. We can further discuss this in our next staff forum.

Dear Dr. Tsang,

I’m delighted to read your personal blog for communication between you and all the staff of the Commission. I wish that with such an effective tool, more direct communication among us will be enhanced.

In response to your letter, I would like to express similar appreciation for Ms. Connie Chan’s contribution to the service. As a colleague working with Connie in QMH for 20 months, I witnessed how she had dedicated herself whole-heartedly in her work. I could see and feel how she had taken Pastoral Care as a mission with both enthusiasm and high expectations. She had always been responsive and responsible to improve the quality of service.

I’m very grateful to have had Connie as my close working companion and I’ve learned a lot from her, both professionally and spiritually. I do hope she will rejoin our service later and be part of the Commission again.

Thank you for providing this platform for me and other staff to share our ideas with you. In this month of May, may we entrust ourselves in Mother Mary who is always faithful in carrying out Her Mission as a handmaid of God!

Yours sincerely,
Maggie Wong, POHPCU
